This event in brief
You are invited to join us in a family-friendly setting for a Q and A session with a prominent local scientist while enjoying coffee and snacks. This informal event allows children and adults to quiz (or even grill!) a scientist on interesting topics of the day. This is a great way for children to meet and interact with an accomplished scientist.
Date & Time: Monday, April 18 @ 7:00 p.m.*
Location: Barnes & Noble, Cary
Speaker: Chuck Pell
Title: Never Launch a Rocket in Your Bedroom
*(Please note this is different from the earlier announced date.)
About the Science Cafe speaker
This year, we are delighted to welcome back our speaker from last year, Chuck Pell, TED speaker and host of Fox TV’s science show, Xploration Station: Earth2050. He has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Triangle Business Journal. Chuck is adept at explaining sciency, techy things to young folks and non-experts. A true polymath, he has been likened to a modern day Leonardo da Vinci, being an inventor, sculptor and entrepreneur.
Chuck was formerly Director of R&D at Dinamation, a firm that built full-size robotic dinosaurs for movie production and science exhibits for display worldwide. He was a co-founder of Nekton Research, a company that pioneered the technology for biomechanical fish-shaped robots, creating the world’s fastest, most maneuverable, smallest and simplest underwater robots. As co-founder of Physcient, based in Durham, Chuck has spearheaded a ground-breaking technology to make surgery safer, easier, and faster.
About the Science Café topic
Chuck’s topic for the Science Café is Never Launch a Rocket in Your Bedroom, with his biographical stories of kid science and tech gone “horribly wrong”–his words, not ours! Chuck’s childhood tales will delight, amaze and inspire children, and perhaps terrify parents (although Chuck emphasizes that he did survive to adulthood!). The stories are all about trying things out, experimenting and exploring, and occasionally getting things wrong. It’ll be a boost for anyone who likes to build, and will inspire those haven’t started to do so.
We’ll be including book recommendations for kids and adults. A portion of all the night’s sales will go to support the school, so please enjoy the tasty snacks, your favorite beverage and consider purchasing a book or two!
Our top recommendation is Andrew Henry’s Meadow by Doris Burn. This book is a children’s classic. This 40th Anniversary Edition will entertain children and adults alike. The creative antics of Andrew Henry Thatcher and his friends will inspire your child’s imagination.
