We are excited to announce that The New School will be forming two Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teams this year — one for 3rd–5th years and one for 6th–8th years.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving program that challenges students to think outside the box, collaborate as a team, and apply their imaginations in new and exciting ways. Students will work together on long-term problems that might involve designing and building structures, creating original skits, engineering mechanical devices, or developing inventive solutions to real-world challenges. They will also practice spontaneous problem-solving, which builds quick thinking, teamwork, and communication skills.
We feel that OM fits beautifully with our Montessori philosophy, as the program is entirely student-driven. Teams are expected to run themselves, and all solutions, designs, and final products must be completely student-made. This gives participants a true sense of ownership and pride in their work, while developing skills in budgeting, time management, public speaking, and collaboration.
Teams will meet for weekly practices after school, with additional Saturday practices scheduled as we get closer to the regional competition on March 7, 2026. Participation in OM is a unique opportunity for students to stretch their creativity, strengthen collaboration skills, and experience the fun and excitement of competing with other schools.
Teams can have a maximum of seven members, and spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no fee to participate in OM, but OM does require students to fundraise to support their team's long-term project.
